Insight: Dashboard

Insight: Dashboard

Overview

Use this page to monitor Insight agent fleet health and identify agents that need attention. An Insight agent is a lightweight collector installed on a monitored machine that sends application and infrastructure telemetry to the platform. The Dashboard gives you one view of how many agents exist, how many are reporting, and which ones have gone quiet.

Before this page is useful, you install and register Insight agents on target machines under Configuration: Insight: Machines, optionally grouping them under Insight: Machine Groups. Once an agent is active, its telemetry becomes part of Insight's agent and machine health data, so a healthy fleet here is a prerequisite for trusting what Insight reports elsewhere.

On this page, you read fleet-wide KPI counts, see how agents are distributed across groups and software versions, and get an early warning when an active agent stops checking in. From here you drill into a specific group by clicking its bar, or filter the machine list by search term, status, or group to find an agent.

Key concepts

  • Insight agent - A lightweight collector installed on a machine that gathers application and infrastructure telemetry for the Insight module. (related: Configuration: Insight: Machines)
  • machine group - A named grouping of machines, such as LoadGen Demo, used to organize agents and filter fleet views on this dashboard. (related: Insight: Machine Groups)
  • stale agent - An agent counted as Active that has not checked in for more than 5 minutes, signaling it may be about to go offline.
  • Needs Onboarding - An agent that has been installed but has not completed the setup required before it starts collecting data. (related: Configuration: Insight: Machines)

When to use it

  • At the start of a shift or incident review, to confirm the Insight fleet is healthy before trusting data from it.
  • After installing a new Insight agent, to verify it moves out of Needs Onboarding and into Active.
  • When data from Insight looks incomplete, to check whether the source agent is Offline or flagged as stale.
  • Before expanding monitoring coverage, to see how agents are distributed across machine groups.
  • When planning an agent upgrade, to see how many machines are still on an older entry in Agent Versions.

Before you begin

  • At least one Insight agent installed and registered, done under Configuration: Insight: Machines.
  • Agents assigned to a machine group if you want them reflected in the Agents by Group chart, set up on Insight: Machine Groups.
  • Agents running and network-connected so they can check in; an agent must check in within 5 minutes to avoid being flagged in the Stale Agents warning.

Common workflows

Review fleet health

Persona: Load-test admin checking Insight before relying on its data

  1. Open the Insight Dashboard.
    • Expect: The Insight Agent Overview page loads with current KPI counts for Total Agents, Active, Offline, and Needs Onboarding.
  2. Review the Agents by Group and Agent Versions charts.
    • Expect: The bar chart shows agent counts per group and the donut chart shows which software versions are installed across the fleet.
  3. Check for a Stale Agents banner beneath the charts.
    • Expect: If any agent is active but hasn't checked in for over 5 minutes, the banner names how many agents are affected.
  4. Use Search, Status filter, or Group filter in the All Machines table to locate the flagged agent.
    • Expect: The table narrows to rows matching your filter criteria.

Verify: The KPI cards, charts, and any Stale Agents banner all reflect the same fleet state, and you can locate the specific machine behind any Offline, Needs Onboarding, or stale count in the All Machines table.

Investigate a specific machine group

Persona: Operator narrowing an investigation to one environment or team's machines

  1. Open the Insight Dashboard and locate the group's bar in Agents by Group.
    • Expect: The chart highlights how many agents that group currently has.
  2. Click the group's bar.
    • Expect: You are taken to the data health view scoped to that group.

Verify: The resulting view shows only machines belonging to the selected group, confirming the drill-down matched the group you clicked.

Steps

Step 1

Open the Insight Dashboard.

Expected result: The Insight Agent Overview page loads, showing the Total Agents, Active, Offline, and Needs Onboarding KPI cards, the Agents by Group and Agent Versions charts, and a Stale Agents warning banner if any agents haven't checked in recently.

This is the starting point for confirming your Insight agent fleet is healthy before you trust or investigate its data further.

  • Insight Agent Overview heading confirms you're on the right page.
  • KPI cards show fleet counts: Total Agents, Active, Offline, Needs Onboarding.
  • Stale Agents banner appears only when an agent is Active but hasn't checked in for over 5 minutes. Insight: Dashboard - step 1

Field reference

Field Purpose Format / Validation Required Default
Search Free-text search that filters the All Machines table by machine name, so you can jump straight to one machine instead of scanning the full list. text input No empty
Status filter Filters the All Machines table to agents in one status, such as Active, Offline, or Needs Onboarding, so you can isolate machines that need attention without scrolling the full list. dropdown No all statuses
Group filter Filters the All Machines table to agents belonging to one machine group, letting you review a single group's machines at a time. dropdown No all groups

Column reference

Column What it shows How to read it
Total Agents Total count of Insight agents registered in your environment across all machine groups. Use it as the baseline to check against the sum of Active, Offline, and Needs Onboarding. A rising total means more agents have been registered; it should equal Active plus Offline plus Needs Onboarding.
Active Count of agents currently reporting telemetry within the expected check-in window. A higher Active count relative to Total Agents means more of your fleet is contributing data. Compare this to Total Agents; any gap means some agents are Offline or still Needs Onboarding.
Offline Count of agents that are not currently connected or reporting data. A non-zero value flags machines whose telemetry is missing from Insight until they reconnect. 0 is the healthy state; investigate any machine contributing to a non-zero Offline count.
Needs Onboarding Count of agents installed but not yet fully configured to start collecting data. Use it to track how many newly installed agents still need setup finished. A non-zero count means those agents are not contributing telemetry yet; finish onboarding them on Configuration: Insight: Machines.
Agents by Group Horizontal bar chart showing how many agents belong to each machine group, so you can confirm agents are distributed across the groups you expect. Longer bars mean more agents in that group; a group missing from the chart currently has no registered agents.
Agent Versions Donut chart showing the distribution of installed Insight agent software versions across your fleet, useful for spotting a mixed-version fleet before planning an upgrade. A single segment means every agent runs the same version; multiple segments mean the fleet is on mixed versions.
Stale Agents warning Banner that appears when one or more agents are marked Active but have not checked in for more than 5 minutes, giving an early signal before an agent flips to Offline. The number in the message tells you how many agents are affected; it only appears once at least one agent exceeds the 5-minute check-in threshold.

Controls reference

Agents by Group bar

Navigates to the data health view scoped to the machine group you click.

When to use: Use it when you've spotted a group with an unexpected agent count and want to inspect that group's machines directly.

Side effects: Read-only navigation; it does not change any data, it only takes you to a filtered view of that group.

Verify the result

After opening the Dashboard, the Insight Agent Overview heading and KPI cards load with current counts, for example a Total Agents count matching the sum of Active, Offline, and Needs Onboarding. The Agents by Group bar chart and Agent Versions donut populate with your actual groups and installed versions. If no Stale Agents banner appears, every active agent has checked in within the last 5 minutes; if it does appear, it tells you how many agents to investigate. If the KPI cards show zero everywhere and you expect agents, check that at least one agent has been installed and registered on Configuration: Insight: Machines.

Troubleshooting

  • Symptom: Total Agents shows 0 even though you've installed agents. Fix: confirm the agent was registered on Configuration: Insight: Machines; an installed but unregistered agent is not counted here.
  • Symptom: An agent stays under Needs Onboarding and never moves to Active. Fix: finish its setup on Configuration: Insight: Machines; it will not report telemetry until onboarding is complete.
  • Symptom: The Stale Agents banner lists an agent as active with no check-in for over 5 minutes. Fix: check that machine's network connectivity and that the Insight agent process is still running; it will move to Offline if the gap continues.
  • Symptom: A banner reads 'Failed to load dashboard data. The last known data is still displayed.' Fix: the page could not refresh from the server; the counts on screen are the last successful load, so retry after a moment.
  • Symptom: A machine group you expect to see is missing from Agents by Group. Fix: confirm agents are actually assigned to that group on Insight: Machine Groups; groups with no agents don't appear as a bar.
  • Prerequisite: Configuration: Insight: Machines - install and register the Insight agents this dashboard counts
  • Prerequisite: Insight: Machine Groups - manage the groups used in the Agents by Group breakdown
