What is a LoadGen Agent?

Mode: the create and edit controls described on this page are shown in Expert mode (sidebar footer toggle Mode: Basic / Expert). In Basic mode the page shows only Refresh.

The LoadGen Agent is a Windows Service that launches the different test-user sessions. For Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, Citrix XenApp, Citrix XenDesktop, Microsoft Remote Desktop Services, Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop, and Omnissa (VMware) Horizon, the LoadGen Agent can launch multiple user sessions to the backend IT environment. When you use the LoadGen Agent in combination with a Fat Client (Windows 10 and Windows 11) it launches one simultaneous session at a time.

Agents are registered and managed in the Platform web UI under Configuration > LoadGen Agents (Full Agents, Core Agents, and VDI Agents each have their own page). Click Add Agent to register an agent by name and address. Full Agents additionally expose maintenance actions from the same page (install or uninstall the agent service, reboot the host, reset, and session commands such as Logon/Logoff/Lock/Unlock), and their Slots and Session Streams capacities are editable per agent or in batch. To remove an agent, use its row actions menu; deletion is blocked while the agent is still assigned to a profile. Read this article to see which TCP ports are used for communication between the LoadGen Agents and the other LoadGen components.

Systems Under Test functionality was completely renewed in the LoadGen Q3 2021 release. You can use LoadGen Agents to retrieve Systems Under Test from machines in the proximity of the LoadGen Agent's physical location. For example: if you have multiple data centers in different locations, add a LoadGen Agent in each data center and collect the Performance Counters of each machine you want to monitor. LoadGen Core Agent

With the LoadGen Q1 2022 release, we introduced the LoadGen Core Agent. The LoadGen Core Agent can be installed on Linux and Windows machines and supports any command line you want to use (for connecting to Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop environments, Omnissa (VMware) Horizon, Parallels, and many more). We also natively support Citrix connections, and with the LoadGen Q2 2023 release we also support native web testing on the following browsers: Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Chromium, and WebKit. You can read more about installing the LoadGen Core Agent in this article.
