SessionSight: Funnels
Overview
Use this page to select a funnel and analyze its step-by-step conversion drop-off. A funnel is a defined sequence of steps, pages or events, that SessionSight tracks to measure how many visitors progress from one step to the next; the gap between two steps' counts shows exactly where visitors abandon a process such as checkout or sign-up.
Funnels, tenants, and containers are created on Configuration: SessionSight: SessionSight before they appear here; each container's traffic comes from an associated datasource. Once you find a problem step, its Recordings control opens matching session recordings so you can see what visitors experienced right before they left.
On this page, choose a tenant, container, and time range to scope the data, then select a funnel to see Completions, Value, Unique Visitors, and Unique Sessions for every step. If the funnel list fails to load, Retry re-attempts the fetch without changing your filters.
Key concepts
- funnel - A defined sequence of steps, pages or events, that SessionSight tracks to measure how many visitors progress from one step to the next. (related: Configuration: SessionSight: SessionSight)
- container - A monitored web app whose traffic feeds this page; its data comes from an associated datasource, so switching containers can show a different set of funnels. (related: Configuration: Datasources)
- sequential steps - A funnel setting that requires a visitor to complete the funnel's steps in the defined order for a step to count; without it, visitors can complete the steps in any order and still count. (related: Configuration: SessionSight: SessionSight)
- tenant - The customer organization whose data is shown; every funnel, metric, and time range on this page is scoped to the selected tenant.
When to use it
- You want to see exactly which step of a multi-step process, such as checkout or sign-up, loses the most visitors.
- You're investigating a reported or suspected drop in conversions and need to narrow it to a specific step and time window.
- You want to compare drop-off across different time ranges to see whether an issue is recent or long-standing.
- You need to jump from a problem step straight to the session recordings that show what visitors actually did there.
- You're verifying that a newly defined funnel tracks the steps and order you expect before relying on it.
Before you begin
- At least one funnel is defined for the tenant and container you plan to view; funnels are created on Configuration: SessionSight: SessionSight. Until one exists, the Funnels panel has nothing to list.
- Your account has a SessionSight license; without one, the page does not load tenant, funnel, or analytics data at all.
- The container you want to analyze has an associated datasource already sending data; containers and their datasources are set up in Configuration: SessionSight: SessionSight.
- You know which tenant and container you want to scope the view to, since both selectors load with a saved default (for example LoadGen B.V. and Production Web App) that may not be the one you need.
Common workflows
Diagnose where visitors abandon a conversion funnel
Persona: Load-test operator or web analyst
- Select the tenant and container you want to analyze from the Tenant selector and Container selector dropdowns.
- Expect: The page re-scopes to the chosen tenant and container, and the Funnels panel reloads to show only funnels defined for that container's datasource.
- Choose a time range using a preset such as 24h or Custom.
- Expect: The chosen preset becomes the active, highlighted button and the funnel list and drop-off data reload for that window.
- Select a funnel from the Funnels list.
- Expect: The right-hand panel replaces its placeholder prompt with the step-by-step drop-off view, showing Completions, Value, Unique Visitors, and Unique Sessions for each step.
- Click Recordings on the step with the sharpest drop.
- Expect: Session recordings matching that step's page or event criteria open, filtered to the sessions that reached it.
Verify: The right panel's step-by-step numbers identify which step loses the most visitors, and the recordings opened from that step show what those visitors actually did right before leaving.
Recover from a funnel load error
Persona: Load-test operator or admin
- Click Retry in the Funnels panel.
- Expect: The page re-requests funnel definitions; if the backend responds, the error message is replaced by the funnel list, or by Define one in Config if none exist yet.
- If the retry fails again, click Refresh in the header.
- Expect: The tenant, container, and time range all reload together; the Funnels panel either shows the funnel list or still reports the backend error.
Verify: The Funnels panel shows a list of funnel names instead of the red error banner, and selecting one loads its drop-off data in the right panel.
Steps
Step 1
Open the Funnels page under SessionSight.
Expected result: The page loads with LoadGen B.V. as the tenant, Production Web App as the container, and 7d as the active time range; the Funnels panel shows "Couldn't load funnels: the backend returned an error." with a Retry button instead of a funnel list, and the right panel shows a placeholder prompting you to select a funnel.
This establishes the tenant, container, and time-range scope that every funnel and drop-off view on this page uses.
- Tenant selector defaults to LoadGen B.V. and Container selector defaults to Production Web App.
- 7d is the active time-range preset among 1h, 4h, 8h, 24h, 7d, and Custom.
- A dismissible "Credentials expiring" notice appears in the top right; it is unrelated to the funnel load error.
Step 2
Click Refresh in the page header.
Expected result: The page reloads with the same tenant, container, and time range; a Configure button now appears next to Refresh and the "Credentials expiring" banner is no longer visible, but the Funnels panel still reports "Couldn't load funnels: the backend returned an error."
Refresh re-queries the current scope without changing your filters, confirming whether a load error was transient.
- Configure (gear icon) opens the SessionSight configuration area to manage funnel definitions.
- The Funnels panel still shows Retry since the backend error persisted after the refresh.
Field reference
| Field | Purpose | Format / Validation | Required | Default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tenant selector | Scopes every funnel, metric, and time range on this page to one customer tenant. Switch tenants to inspect a different customer's conversion data without leaving the page. | dropdown, single-select | No | LoadGen B.V. |
| Container selector | Scopes the page to one monitored web app container. The container determines which datasource feeds the funnel list and drop-off chart, so switching containers can show a completely different set of funnels; pick the container that matches the application you want to analyze. | dropdown, single-select | No | Production Web App |
| Time range | Sets the look-back window used to calculate Completions, Value, Unique Visitors, and Unique Sessions for every funnel step. Shorter windows (1h, 4h) isolate a recent spike or anomaly but can show too little traffic for low-volume steps; longer windows (24h, 7d) smooth out short-term noise and suit spotting a persistent drop-off pattern. Custom lets you pick an exact start and end time instead of a preset. | segmented button group: 1h, 4h, 8h, 24h, 7d, Custom | No | 7d |
Column reference
| Column | What it shows | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Funnel name (Funnels list) | Identifies each funnel defined for the current tenant and container. | A plain name means the funnel loaded normally; select it to load that funnel's drop-off detail in the right panel. |
| Status badge (Funnels list) | Shows whether the funnel is actively tracked. | An Off badge next to the name means the funnel is disabled and may not be collecting new conversion data; no badge means the funnel is enabled. |
| Step order badge (Funnels list) | Indicates whether the funnel's steps must be completed in order. | A sequential badge means a visitor must complete the funnel's steps in the defined order for a step to count; without it, visitors can complete the steps in any order and still count toward each step's totals. |
| Completions | Shows the count of visitors who completed this funnel step within the current time range. | Compare Completions step-to-step: a sharp drop from one step to the next marks the point where visitors abandon the flow. |
| Value | Shows the numeric value metric tracked for the step, as configured on the funnel. | Read alongside Completions to see whether the steps losing the most visitors are also the ones losing the most tracked value. |
| Unique Visitors | Shows the count of distinct visitors who reached this step in the current time range. | Compare to Completions to see reach versus actual step completion, and compare across steps to measure absolute audience drop-off. |
| Unique Sessions | Shows the count of distinct sessions that reached this step; one visitor can contribute multiple sessions. | A Unique Sessions count notably higher than Unique Visitors at the same step indicates repeat visits are driving that step's traffic. |
Controls reference
Refresh
Re-queries the funnel list and, if a funnel is selected, its drop-off data for the current tenant, container, and time range.
When to use: After changing filters if the page doesn't update automatically, or to re-check after a backend error.
Side effects: Read-only reload; it persists no changes and does not alter any funnel's configuration.
Retry
Re-attempts to load the funnel list after a "Couldn't load funnels" error.
When to use: When the Funnels panel shows the backend-error message instead of your funnel list.
Side effects: Read-only: re-fetches funnel definitions scoped to the current tenant and container; does not change any funnel's configuration.
Dismiss
Hides the "Credentials expiring" banner for the current view.
When to use: When you've acknowledged the credential-expiry warning and want it out of the way while you work.
Side effects: Cosmetic only; it hides the banner but does not renew the underlying credential, which still expires on schedule.
Configure
Opens the SessionSight configuration area for tenants, containers, and funnel definitions.
When to use: When you need to add, edit, or disable a funnel rather than just view its data.
Side effects: Navigates away from this page; no data on this page changes until you act in the configuration area.
Define one in Config
Takes you to the SessionSight configuration area to create your first funnel.
When to use: When the Funnels panel is empty because no funnel has been defined yet for this tenant and container, as opposed to failing with a backend error.
Side effects: Navigates away from this page; creates nothing by itself.
Funnel row selection
Loads the selected funnel's step-by-step drop-off view in the right panel.
When to use: Once the Funnels panel lists at least one funnel and you want to inspect its conversion data.
Side effects: Read-only: changes what the right panel displays; does not alter the funnel's configuration.
Recordings
Opens session recordings filtered to the sessions and events matching a specific step's page or event criteria.
When to use: When a step shows an unexpected drop and you want to see what visitors actually experienced at that step.
Side effects: Read-only navigation to session recordings; does not change any data on this page.
Verify the result
When the primary task succeeds, the Funnels panel lists your defined funnels instead of an error message, and clicking one highlights it and replaces the right-hand placeholder with a step-by-step breakdown showing Completions, Value, Unique Visitors, and Unique Sessions for every step. The step where these numbers fall the most compared to the step before it is the point in the flow where visitors abandon the process. If the right panel still shows "Select a funnel from the list to view its step-by-step drop-off," no funnel is selected yet. If the left panel shows "Couldn't load funnels: the backend returned an error" instead of a list, the load failed and no drop-off data is available until a retry succeeds.
Troubleshooting
- Symptom: The Funnels panel shows "Couldn't load funnels: the backend returned an error" instead of a funnel list. Fix: Click Retry in the panel; if it fails again, click Refresh in the header to reload the tenant, container, and time range together.
- Symptom: The right panel keeps showing "Select a funnel from the list to view its step-by-step drop-off." Fix: Confirm the Funnels panel actually lists a funnel rather than an error state, then click a funnel's name to select it.
- Symptom: The Funnels panel is empty with no error message. Fix: No funnel has been defined yet for the selected tenant and container; use Define one in Config or Configure to create one.
- Symptom: Switching the Container selector shows a different or empty set of funnels than expected. Fix: Funnels are tied to the container's datasource; confirm you selected the container whose data you intended to analyze.
- Symptom: A "Credentials expiring" banner covers part of the page. Fix: Click Dismiss to hide it for now, and reissue the referenced token under Configuration: Credential Profiles before it expires.
