Analyse: Dashboards
Overview
Use this page to create and manage BI dashboards built on your LoadGen test data. A dashboard is a saved page of charts and panels that summarizes test results in one place, so you do not have to dig through individual runs or reports to see the metrics that matter to you.
Dashboards sit downstream of your testing activity: you usually build one from a completed test run, from a blank layout, or from a template, so a run or template typically needs to exist first. The charts and panels inside a dashboard are arranged on its own detail page; this list page only covers creating, tagging, sharing and removing the dashboard itself. Shared dashboards become visible to other users under their Shared with me tab.
This page lists the dashboards you own as cards showing their name, sharing status, tags, and owner and last-updated details. You can start a new dashboard from scratch, from a specific test run, or from a template, including one-click starter dashboards built on Insight monitoring data, and you can view, edit, or delete any existing dashboard from its card.
Key concepts
- Dashboard - A saved page of charts and panels built from your LoadGen test data, used to review and present results without rebuilding charts each time.
- Template - A predefined dashboard layout you can copy to start a new dashboard instead of building panels from scratch; the Templates tab also offers one-click Insight starter dashboards built over Insight monitoring data. (related: Insight: Dashboard)
- Visibility - A setting on each dashboard that controls whether only you can see it or whether it is shared with other users; shared dashboards display a SHARED badge and appear on other users' Shared with me tab.
- Tags - Comma-separated labels you attach to a dashboard to identify what data or environment it covers; they appear as chips on the dashboard's card.
When to use it
- To review the BI dashboards you have already built on your LoadGen test data.
- To build a new dashboard from scratch to track a chosen set of metrics over time.
- To generate a dashboard already populated with charts from a specific completed test run.
- To open a dashboard someone else has shared with you, from the Shared with me tab.
- To start a dashboard from a prebuilt layout instead of designing panels yourself, from the Templates tab.
- To rename, retag, reshare, or delete a dashboard you no longer need as-is.
Before you begin
- At least one completed test run if you plan to use New from run to auto-build a dashboard from its results; completed runs are listed under Testing: Test Runs.
- A dashboard shared by another user, or a published template, if you plan to use the Shared with me or Templates tab - until then, those tabs show nothing to copy.
- Insight licensed on your account if you want to use the one-click Insight starter templates on the Templates tab; unlicensed accounts do not see those starter templates.
Common workflows
Create a dashboard from scratch
Persona: Load-test operator
- Select New dashboard.
- Expect: A dialog opens with Name, Description, Tags and Visibility fields.
- Type
svc.lg.ospreyin the Name field, and set Description, Tags and Visibility as needed.- Expect: The fields reflect your entries; the Visibility choice determines whether the SHARED badge will appear once saved.
- Save the dialog.
- Expect: The dialog closes, the new dashboard opens to its detail page, and a new card appears under My dashboards.
Verify: The new dashboard's card appears under My dashboards with the name and tags you entered, and shows the SHARED badge only if you chose a shared visibility.
Build a dashboard from a test run
Persona: Load-test operator reviewing a completed run
- Select New from run.
- Expect: A flow opens for picking a completed test run.
- Pick the run you want to analyze.
- Expect: LoadGen generates a new dashboard pre-populated with charts built from that run's results and opens it.
Verify: The generated dashboard appears under My dashboards and its panels already show metrics from the selected run, without you having to build any charts manually.
Share an existing dashboard with other users
Persona: Dashboard owner
- Select the Edit icon on the dashboard you want to share.
- Expect: A dialog opens pre-filled with the dashboard's current Name, Description, Tags and Visibility.
- Change Visibility to shared and save.
- Expect: The dialog closes and the dashboard's card now shows the SHARED badge.
Verify: The dashboard shows the SHARED badge on My dashboards, and it appears under the Shared with me tab for other users.
Steps
Step 1
Open the Dashboards page under Analyse in the left navigation.
Expected result: The page opens on the My dashboards tab, listing your dashboards as cards with New from run and New dashboard buttons in the header.
This is the starting point for reviewing, creating, sharing, or removing BI dashboards built on your LoadGen test data.
- My dashboards, Shared with me and Templates tabs sit below the page title.
- New from run and New dashboard buttons are at the top right of the header.
- Each dashboard card shows its name, a SHARED badge when applicable, tag chips, and View, Edit and Delete icons.
Tabs on this page
-
My dashboards - Lists the dashboards you own as cards, each with its name, SHARED badge when applicable, tags, owner and last-updated line, and view, edit and delete actions.
- Dashboard name, SHARED badge, tag chips, owner/last-updated line, View/Edit/Delete icons.
-
Shared with me - Lists dashboards other users have marked as shared, so you can open dashboards you do not own. Switch here when you are looking for a dashboard a teammate built rather than one of your own.
- Same card layout as My dashboards, filtered to dashboards shared by other users.
-
Templates - Offers ready-made dashboard layouts you can copy into a new dashboard, including one-click Insight starter dashboards for system, process and network performance and user-experience timing, and lets you publish one of your own dashboards as a new template.
- Template cards with a Use template action; a publish control for sharing your own dashboard as a template.
Field reference
| Field | Purpose | Format / Validation | Required | Default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Name | The dashboard's display name, shown on its card and wherever it is listed or shared; choose a name specific enough that teammates can identify its contents without opening it. | Free text | Yes | - |
| Description | Free-text notes on what the dashboard covers or why it was built; use it to record context that is not obvious from the name alone, such as which environment or test scope it summarizes. | Free text | No | - |
| Tags (comma-separated) | Comma-separated labels used to categorize the dashboard; add tags that reflect the system, environment, or test type so you can scan for the right dashboard among many cards. | Comma-separated free text | No | - |
| Visibility | Controls whether the dashboard is private to you or shared with other users; choosing shared makes the SHARED badge appear on the card and lets other users find it under their own Shared with me tab, while keeping it private restricts it to you. | Single-select | Yes | - |
Column reference
| Column | What it shows | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Dashboard name | - | Identifies the dashboard on its card; select View or Edit on the same card to open or change it. |
| SHARED badge | - | Appears only when the dashboard's Visibility is set to shared; its absence means the dashboard is private to its owner. |
| Tags chips | - | Shows the tags assigned through the create or edit dialog; use them to tell similar dashboards apart at a glance. |
| Owner and last updated | - | Shows who owns the dashboard and when it was last modified; check this to judge whether the dashboard reflects current data and who to ask about it. |
Controls reference
New from run
Starts a flow to create a new dashboard pre-populated with charts built from the results of a test run you pick.
When to use: Use this when you want a dashboard that already contains the key metrics for one completed run instead of building panels manually.
Side effects: Mutating: creates a new dashboard once you complete the flow and opens its detail page.
New dashboard
Opens a dialog to name a new dashboard and set its Description, Tags and Visibility.
When to use: Use this to start a dashboard from scratch when no existing run or template matches what you want to track.
Side effects: Mutating: creates a new, empty dashboard once you save the dialog and opens its detail page so you can add panels.
Create your first dashboard
Opens the same create-dashboard dialog as New dashboard.
When to use: Use this the first time you open Dashboards and no dashboard exists yet.
Side effects: Mutating: identical to New dashboard.
View
Opens the selected dashboard in read-only view.
When to use: Use this to check a dashboard's charts without risking changes to its layout or metadata.
Side effects: Read-only: no data changes; navigates away from the list to the dashboard.
Edit
Opens a dialog pre-filled with the dashboard's current Name, Description, Tags and Visibility.
When to use: Use this to rename a dashboard, change its tags, or switch it between private and shared, without touching its existing panels.
Side effects: Mutating: saving updates the dashboard's metadata; its existing panel layout is preserved unchanged.
Delete (row icon)
Opens a confirmation dialog titled Delete dashboard?
When to use: Use this to remove a dashboard you no longer need.
Side effects: Read-only by itself: it only opens the confirmation dialog; nothing is deleted until you confirm.
Delete (confirm)
Permanently removes the dashboard from the list.
When to use: Use this only after you are sure you no longer need the dashboard or its saved layout.
Side effects: Mutating and irreversible: the dashboard and its panel layout are deleted.
Cancel
Closes the current dialog, whether it is the create/edit dialog or the delete confirmation, without saving.
When to use: Use this if you opened a dialog by mistake or decide not to proceed.
Side effects: Read-only: discards any unsaved input or cancels the pending deletion.
Use template
Creates a new dashboard pre-built from the selected template's layout, from the Templates tab.
When to use: Use this to start from a ready-made layout, including a one-click Insight starter dashboard, instead of designing panels yourself.
Side effects: Mutating: creates a new dashboard copied from the template.
Publish as template
Shares one of your dashboards as a template other users can copy from the Templates tab.
When to use: Use this when you have built a dashboard layout worth reusing across teams or projects.
Side effects: Mutating: makes the dashboard's layout available to others as a template; it does not alter or remove your original dashboard.
Verify the result
After creating, editing, or sharing a dashboard, its card appears or updates under My dashboards with the name, tags, and SHARED badge you set. Selecting View opens the dashboard's charts, whether it was built from a blank start, a template, or a specific test run. If a dashboard isn't visible where you expect it, confirm you're on the right tab: My dashboards for dashboards you own, Shared with me for ones others shared with you. If a shared dashboard doesn't show the SHARED badge, reopen it with Edit and check that Visibility was saved as shared.
Troubleshooting
- Symptom: A dashboard you expect to see is missing from the list. Fix: Check whether it was shared to you rather than owned by you, and look under the Shared with me tab instead of My dashboards.
- Symptom: A dashboard doesn't show the SHARED badge even though you meant to share it. Fix: Open it with the Edit icon and confirm the Visibility setting was saved as shared, then save again.
- Symptom: Deleting a dashboard removed a layout you still needed. Fix: Deletion is permanent with no undo; rebuild it from the same test run with New from run, or from a matching layout under Templates.
- Symptom: New from run doesn't produce the charts you expected. Fix: Confirm you selected the specific completed run whose results you want summarized; the generated panels reflect only that run's data.
- Symptom: The one-click Insight starter templates don't appear on the Templates tab. Fix: These templates require Insight to be licensed on your account; confirm your license before expecting them to show.
