Tutorial: Set up LoadGen Load & Performance Testing for Fat Clients - Microsoft Windows environments

You have finished the following tutorials:

Getting started with the LoadGen Platform

Step 1: Choose your Target Environment

  1. Select Local Client. LoadGen supports Fat Client testing on Microsoft Windows 7 and higher, and Windows Server 2008 R2 and higher. With this technology, the application under test runs locally on the agent itself, rather than inside a remote session.
  2. Enter a name for your test below the question How do you want to call this test?
  3. Continue to the next step.

The technology selector and each wizard behind it are documented in Configure load profiles.

Step 2: Create your LoadGen Agents

  1. In this step, you need to set up your LoadGen Agents. You can add any machine in your IT environment. Read more about LoadGen Agents What is a LoadGen Agent?.
  2. We advise you to add the machine you're working from first, just to get familiar with LoadGen Agents, and register additional LoadGen Agents later.

Registering and enrolling agents is documented in Manage test agents and Tutorial: Installation of the LoadGen Core Agent.

Add a LoadGen Agent

Because this technology runs the application under test locally on the agent, a LoadGen Agent needs to be installed directly on the Windows machine that will execute the test. Agents are no longer installed from a desktop configurator; instead, enroll the agent from a Launcher Appliance, or register it manually on Configuration > LoadGen Agents.

Registering and enrolling agents is documented in Manage test agents and Tutorial: Installation of the LoadGen Core Agent.

Step 3: Useraction Flow (User simulation / Test script)

  1. Select which Useraction Flow to use for your test. Read more about the Useraction Flow LoadGen Studio: Create a new Workload/Flow.
  2. You have two options: use the example user simulation flow provided by LoadGen, or create your own flow in LoadGen Studio. LoadGen Studio is still used to record and author your Useraction Flow / test script.
  3. We advise you to use the example user simulation flow from LoadGen to get started.

The workload that a profile runs is managed in Manage workloads and add-in machines; the flow itself is authored in LoadGen Studio: Create a new Workload/Flow.

Step 4: Set up your Load Profile

  1. With the Load Profile, you determine how many users can log in at the same time and how long the gap is between two login sessions. Read more about Load Profiles Create and manage test scenarios.
  2. We advise you to start with a default setting of 1 log-in with an interval of 30 seconds (for 5 users, the total log-in duration will be 2 minutes). You can always change these settings later.

See Configure load profiles for the wizard that configures this.

Step 5: Add your Systems under Test machines

  1. With LoadGen you can monitor your whole IT environment and get insight into how applications perform in correlation with the performance of machines. Read more about Systems under Test Manage Systems Under Test (SUTs).
  2. Add your Systems under Test machines and Performance Counters, then continue.

Adding systems under test and their counters is documented in Manage Systems Under Test (SUTs) and Configuration: Systems Under Test: PerfCounter Settings.

Step 6: Start your test

  1. Go to Testing > Load Profiles and choose New Profile.
  2. Select the Local Client technology card for this Fat Client test.
  3. Choose Run Test to start your load test.
